Audit, action plan and advice for your welfare approach

The audit assesses your practices, their effects on the animals and their regulatory compliance, based on your documents and an on-site visit. You receive a report and a plan of preventive and corrective actions, discussed with your team.

The audit, a review of your welfare approach

A facility puts many actions in place for its animals' welfare, from the enrichment programme to how teams are organised. It is hard to judge their effect from the inside.

The audit provides this outside perspective. It is based on an analysis of the documents you send us and an on-site visit, with discussions with the people in charge of the programme and the animals: vets, project managers, animal care teams, scientists.

What the audit assesses

The audit covers the actions in place and their results:

  • The relevance of actions

Welfare strategy, enrichment programme, training, team organisation, facilities.

  • Their effects on the animals

The welfare of the animals currently at the facility.

  • Fit with your objectives

What the actions deliver in relation to what you are aiming for.

  • Compliance of practices

    With regard to regulatory requirements.

How the audit works

The audit combines a document review, a visit to the facility and a debrief with the team:

  • Review the documents

Procedures, animal welfare plan and other documents you provide.

  • Visit the facility

Meet the teams, see the animals and their facilities, check how procedures are applied.

  • Analyse and assess practices

Relevance of the welfare plan to current activities, effectiveness of the measures in place, regulatory compliance.

  • Present the report

Discuss the findings with the team, then draw up a plan of preventive and corrective actions.

An action plan built from the audit

The action plan turns the audit results into targeted actions, to improve animal management and welfare while building the teams' skills:

  1. Prioritising actions

Team training, field practices, facilities, group management, management tools and procedures.

  2. Expected objectives

What each selected action should achieve.

  3. Planning

The schedule of actions and their follow-up.

  4. Everyone's role

Welfare is the whole team's responsibility, but everyone has a specific role in it. The plan defines or restates these roles, with decision trees.

Advice and follow-up after the audit

After the audit, advice and follow-up extend the action plan, alongside the facility's veterinary monitoring:

  • Animal follow-up

Support on managing social groups and on the issues identified.

  • Good day-to-day practice

Consolidating the team's skills in managing the animals.

  • Monitoring and shared experience

Literature monitoring, shared experience, connecting you with other facilities.
