Co-developed in the field

Born from a research project with Branféré Park

A true barometer of animal welfare, the tool was co-created at the initiative of the Parc animalier et botanique de Branféré. The protocol was designed in the field with the zoological teams, then tested and refined alongside the keepers.

Already adopted by around twenty parks across Europe — Zoo de la Flèche, Le Pal, Réserve de la Haute Touche, Montpellier, Citadelle de Besançon, Zoo Landau (DE), Budapest Zoo (HU)…

With this barometer, for the first time we can review our 195 species quickly while staying scientifically grounded.

One module for every monitoring need

Your teams collect data in the field with the Animal Welfare Monitor app, on phone or tablet, even without a network. They then find it on the web, to analyse it and organise the work.

Rapid assessment

Know where to start. Your teams answer a few short questions on housing, feeding, health and behaviour for each group of animals. You get an initial overview across all your species, which you can then rank by priority before drawing up an action plan.

Sector logbook

Give each team a clear view of its day. Daily report, tasks, pinned information, ongoing treatments: each sector finds its information in one place. Recurring tasks are scheduled once and then come back automatically.

Environmental parameters

Document the animals' living conditions. Your teams record temperature, humidity, CO₂, UV, pH or ammonia in enclosures and pools; the platform tracks how they change and flags any threshold exceeded, based on limits you set by zone and by parameter.

Veterinary monitoring

Follow each individual's health over time. Keepers record weight, appetite, faeces and body condition in the field, with a photo if needed; the platform turns them into individual curves. Prescriptions entered by the vet create the treatments to administer, which teams then see in the app.

Behavioural observations

Know your animals' activities and the range of behaviours they express. Your teams observe an individual, live or on video, using the species' ethogram; you find the automatically calculated time budget on the platform. Ethograms are illustrated with photos and videos and available in several languages.

Use of space

See how your animals actually use their enclosure. Your teams place each animal on the map, zone by zone, with the behaviour observed (scan sampling): one individual, a group, or several species at once. The platform turns these records into 2D and 3D heat maps.

Enrichment

Document the enrichment in place and assess its impact. Your teams build an illustrated catalogue, track the day-to-day set-up of enrichment enclosure by enclosure and assess its effects. The module follows the S.P.I.D.E.R. framework (Mellen & MacPhee, 2001).

ZIMS-compatible

ZIMS synchronisation

Never enter the same information twice. You import the animals already recorded in ZIMS, then send back to ZIMS the data collected day to day, such as weights and notes.
