EPZQF, a European framework for the qualification of zookeepers

A modern zoo carries out several missions at once: ensuring the welfare of its animals, keeping and breeding wild animals safely, contributing to the conservation of wildlife and plants, meeting visitors' expectations and keeping a balanced budget. These missions require varied and complementary skills, and well-trained teams.

Yet in many European countries, there is neither an official and recognised initial training nor continuing professional training. In France, for example, initial training is offered by both public and private institutions, and its content can vary from one institution to another; continuing training remains occasional.
