Supporting zoos that are EAZA members, or that wish to become members
As a consultancy specialised in animal welfare, Akongo supports zoos that are already EAZA members, and those preparing their membership, in several areas:
- Team training
Sessions at your facility or remotely (welfare assessment, observation methodology, use of the tools, interpretation of results). Our training courses include the modules of the European EPZQF project for the qualification of zookeepers, supported by EAZA.
- Enclosure design
Support for your projects to create or redesign enclosures, and a dedicated training course on designing enclosures suited to the species, which also meet the needs of the team and of visitors.
- Enrichment programme
Support to set up your enrichment programme and to check whether it meets the behavioural objectives set.
- Welfare assessment
Support to assess the welfare of your animals with Animal Welfare Monitor: the free rapid assessment, for a first overview of your species, then species-specific assessments (more than 100 species available) and behavioural observations.
- Audit and action plan
An independent assessment of your approach (welfare strategy, enrichment programme, training, team organisation, facilities), followed by an action plan that sets the priorities among the actions to implement.
Documents ready for your EAZA files
In Animal Welfare Monitor on the web, the Enrichments module, available in the Progress offer, produces two documents to attach to your EAZA files:
- Enrichment register
a PDF that lists all the enrichments available in the selected sectors: a formal record of your programme.
- EAZA enrichment report
a PDF organised according to the EAZA enrichment screening: enclosure coverage and session frequency, details by species, assessment results against objectives, breakdown by EAZA enrichment category. Your own texts on the enrichment approval procedure and on the time the team spends on enrichment complete it.
