A concrete case: from data to action, at low cost
In one facility, stereotypies were observed without their frequency or causes being known. Collecting behavioural data made it possible to objectify the phenomenon, then to adjust daily practices — feeding schedules, enrichment distribution — without modifying the environment.
Results: near-complete removal of the stereotypies and an increase in time spent feeding, exploring, and moving. All at a very limited cost, following a logic of measure → trials → reinforcement of the changes.
A rigorous methodology
- Training & validation — concordance sessions between observers on the same individual, percentage agreement and Cohen's kappa to measure concordance.
- Collection & analysis — focal observation of targeted individuals with longitudinal tracking, identification of social interactions (sociograms), and a link to the enrichment module.
