Field data collection, mobile and offline

Zoological parks rarely have perfect Wi-Fi coverage across their entire grounds. Certain areas or buildings are dead zones. The Animal Welfare Monitor mobile app includes a complete offline mode: all your observations, assessments, and media are stored directly on your device in an embedded database that does not depend on the network.

Offline mode is configurable to suit your situation: you can activate it for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 4 hours, with automatic reconnection at the end of the chosen period. When the network returns, synchronisation sends your data in chronological order with integrity verification. Nothing is lost, nothing is duplicated.

Photos and videos captured offline are also covered: they are automatically compressed and queued for upload, then sent as soon as the connection is sufficient. You work without interruption — synchronisation is the app’s job, not yours.

Scan sampling requires recording each individual’s position in the enclosure at regular intervals. The app loads the enclosure map directly on your screen, with smooth navigation that supports pinch-to-zoom and tactile scrolling with precision. Each animal is placed in a grid cell, and the system records the exact zone, time, and species in a single action.

A selection bar lets you switch between species without leaving the map, which is essential for mixed enclosures. Positioning and behavioural data collection happen simultaneously: position and activity are recorded together. Before the session begins, observation zones are defined on the map, and the app then guides the observer zone by zone.

Positioning data then feeds into spatial analyses on the web platform: heatmaps, Shannon indices, and proximity matrices. What you collect in the field with a few taps transforms into actionable scientific analyses.
